Oh, Miss Shirley...

During my recent trip to Baltimore, I had my heart set on being super "touristy." I wanted to explore the inner harbor ... try lots of great restaurants ... visit the aquarium, you know, be THAT person. First on my list was to check out "Miss Shirleys Cafe" ... a famous spot that was featured on the Food Network show "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives." It was my intention to eat here ONCE you guys .... just once. Well, Miss Shirley and I became besties by the end of my 3-day stay in Baltimore because I went there EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. I don't regret it one bit. When I step on the scale I might ... but I don't plan on doing that for awhile so for now, I'm going to just dream about every last bite. I'll be a gem jerk and share some photos with you ... so you can salivate a little, but mostly so you can understand (and not judge) my decision.

(**The last two photos are from Miss Shirley's site! But they are true to the photo - served up just beautifully!)

Toscanini's...Best of Boston!

Some believe it to be the best in the world (yes, world), and every list of "Boston's Best" includes this family-owned ice cream shop! Toscanini's has been part of my own "must try" list for some time now, created back when Chris and I first moved to Boston. Over the weekend, we finally ventured to Cambridge to see what all the fuss was about.
To start, ALL of the ice cream is homemade right at the shop. They have been making ice cream every morning since 1986! Flavors like "burnt caramel" and "belgian chocolate" are mainstays, but there are always new ones in the rotation. An added bonus is that the toppings like whipped cream, chocolate sauce and butterscotch sauce are homemade as well! I can highly recommend the flavors "Butter Almond" and "CookiesXCreme" because Chris and I went with those - and they were amazing! I hope you all get a chance to check this place out if you ever come to the Boston area. It's definitely worth the extra calories :)

Best Cupcakes in Boston

I'm totally a cupcake girl. I dream of opening a cute little boutique cupcake spot and taste testing everything ... doesn't that sound divine? In the meantime, I'll just keep taste testing at Georgetown Cupcake...easily, the best of Boston! It's conveniently located right on Newbury...so anytime you stroll down the street for some shopping, you're bound to take a detour if you pass. I've included my top 5 favorites below, although you really can't go wrong with anything you choose!

Date Night: Aquitaine Boston

My husband and I decided to have a little dinner date night, and we finally were able to get reservations at Aquitaine Boston in the South End. Aquitaine is a "modern Parisian bistro" and you walk in instantly feeling welcome and "at home." The dishes are traditional and delightful, the atmosphere is romantic but lively. It was my favorite (yes, my favorite) restaurant we have eaten at so far in Boston! The menu has a large variety of dishes, and also offers a "prix fixe menu" before 6:30, which we were able to order from; three courses for $29.95...such a fantastic deal! For my 3 courses I chose the "Soupe a L'Oignon", Steak Frites, and Chocolate Mousse. Chris went with the Warm Beet Salade, Roasted Half Chicken, and Creme Brûlée!
To start, the french onion soup was AMAZING, complete with truffled braised short rib and melted aged gruyere. For me, it would be difficult to order any other appetizer, because it was THAT good. Chris's appetizer was super yummy also...the beets were sliced thin and topped with a sherry vinaigrette and toasted walnuts. He did think there would be more greens, but he was still happy with the dish and thought it was very tasty.
Next, the entrees. I ordered my steak medium and it was so perfectly cooked and seasoned with a black truffle vinaigrette that it basically melted in your mouth! (I think Chris was a little jealous) The frites were amazing dipped in a garlic aoili! My dish was also served with a large side of greens which was a nice addition to the plate as well. The roasted half chicken was served over a parsnip puree that was to-die-for! Wow...the chicken was falling off the bone and the skin was perfectly crisped. We shared a little of each, and were extremely happy with the flavor of both dishes. Desserts were pretty off the charts as well, especially the creme brûlée! I'm a chocolate girl (even more so with this pregnancy) but the brûlée was pretty spectacular. The mousse was extremely rich and served with homemade (yes, homemade) whipped cream...which makes all the difference in the world, doesn't it? LOVE!
We were so thoroughly impressed with our meal, that we cannot wait to return! They also serve brunch on the weekends - which I'd love to try! I highly HIGHLY suggest visiting this restaurant...you will not be disappointed!

Boston Dining: Coppa

Happy Tuesday To All! Sorry I'm just getting this to you - I've been sick for the last few days so I'm trying to lay low, rest and relax as much as possible. I know you might be thinking "is blogging really not relaxing?" and to that I say....nice point. Just let me off the hook this time ok? Ok, thanks :)

Chris and I went to dinner at the coolest spot in the South End called Coppa. It has been on our radar since we discovered the chef there is also the chef at our favorite restaurant of all time, Earth at Hidden Pond in Maine. Coppa definitely did not disappoint and we are already brainstorming about the family/friends that would love it there too! It's a tiny place so it fills up really quick...but the atmosphere is really chill and relaxed which we liked. It's also very dim and has a romantic vibe as well.

To start, we ordered the fried risotto balls and sangria. Game over. For our entrees, I went with the rigatoni con pork sagu and Chris with the semolina pasta con chicken sausage and broccoli. Both dishes were extremely flavorful. We were in and out in an hour, which was perfect since I wasn't feeling well anyway. Side note: The bread is unreal and I had six pieces.

We definitely recommend this spot! Make reservations if you can - you will LOVE it!
